Profit & margin

Selling a lot isn't the same as earning a lot. This report shows how much you actually keep after paying for the goods you sold, for the whole shop, each category and every product.

⏱ About 4 minutes Where: Reports › Profit & Margin

Two words to know

  1. Gross profit = what you sold it for − what it cost you. Sell a drink for RM 3.50 that cost RM 1.20: profit RM 2.30.
  2. Margin = profit as a share of the selling price. RM 2.30 ÷ RM 3.50 = 65.7%. Higher is better.
This report is only as good as your cost pricesWiPOS uses the Cost Price each product had when it was sold. Products with no cost price look like 100% profit, and changing a cost price later doesn't change past sales. Set cost prices when you add products, and keep them up to date when supplier prices change.

The summary

This example uses This Week.

  1. 1 Click Reports › Profit & Margin, then pick your date range.
  2. 2 Gross Profit — the total you earned on the goods sold. Green is a profit, red is a loss.
  3. 3 Gross Margin — your overall margin. Here, RM 26.50 of every RM 100 sold is profit.
  4. 4 Cost of Goods — what the goods you sold cost you, and what share of revenue that is. Revenue is next to it.
  5. 5 How many products fall into each margin band: High (30% or more), Good (10–30%), Low (0–10%) and At Loss.

Profit by category and by product

  1. 1 Profit by Category — which categories earn you the most. Hover over a bar to see its margin. A red bar means that category lost money.
  2. 2 Each product shows its category, quantity sold, revenue (Rev) and cost of goods (COGS). On the right are the profit and a margin badge: green 30%+, amber below 30%, red a loss.
  3. 3 Sort the list By Profit, By Margin or By Revenue.
Read the exampleMilo is the top seller (RM 1,047.80) but keeps only 21.9%. Kopi O Ais sells far less (RM 318.50) but keeps 65.7%, so it earned almost as much profit. Sort By Margin to find products like this worth promoting, and those at the bottom whose price may need a rethink.
